Evoking daydreams is the passion of renowned Italian lighting design duo, Giopato & Coombes, and this week we are excited to announce our exclusive collaboration for NYCxDesign 2024. For the first time in New York City, SUITE NY will be hosting Cristiana Giopato and Christopher Coombes as we present the US premiere of their latest design collection, Bruma. This immersive introduction also features installations of their DAL and Maehwa designs. A magical daydream set against the backdrop of the magnificent Manhattan skyline showcases the fusion of craftsmanship and innovation that is emblematic of these true creatives.

Fresh from its debut at Salone del Mobile in Milan, Bruma is a suspended landscape of light that tickles your perception of space. Inspired by the stratification of fog in the Italian landscape, Bruma is unlike any lighting design we’ve seen before. Playing on a balance between density and absence, Bruma is as much an experience as it is a design. Set against the backdrop of the Empire State Building this week in our penthouse installation, this exquisite design is even more breathtaking.

Maehwa is the Korean word for plum blossom. The project draws inspiration from a moment Giopato & Coombes experienced when they were in a park in Seoul. Recalling this moment of inspiration, Cristiana and Christopher explain: “People of all ages, together with us, were turning their heads up to gaze at the plum blossoms, with their open corolla or with small spherical buds still closed, waiting for them to vibrate in the breeze. In the natural inspiration, the leafy branches laden with blossoms were filling the space creating their own composition, and this guided us in designing the compositional structure of the Maehwa collection.”

The DAL 달 (Drawing A Line) project showcases the connection between East and West and is a celebration of the cross-cultural encounter between Korea and Italy. The name itself plays with the acronym of English words and at the same time, is an homage to Korea as a lunar culture, telling the story of a journey into unexpected surprise. The exhibition debuted in Paris and Seoul in 2023 and was also featured in Milan in 2024.
Giopato & Coombes
Giopato & Coombes Studio was founded by Cristiana Giopato and Christopher Coombes in 2006. To this Italo-British duo, design means finding the synthesis between the emotion behind conception and the pragmatism of innovation. The study of the behavior of light, of the shapes enhancing its beauty and the technology that allows its existence, is the foundation of every project they design. Every collection is characterized by a sophisticated grace and achieved with noble materials.
