In celebration of the 90th Anniversary of Artek’s Stool 60, we are thrilled to unveil the limited edition Loimu, exclusively available at SUITE NY. Born of modernist ideals and Finnish innovation, Stool 60’s great legacy and continued relevance owe much to Alvar Aalto’s original vision for a universal object made entirely from native birch. This special edition commemorates Stool 60’s great virtues—its unique construction and responsible production values, the beauty and variety to be found in Finnish wood, Stool 60’s ageless longevity as well as its low ecological impact.
COMPONENTS
Alvar Aalto
Stool 60 Loimu (flame, in English) is produced from an exceptionally rare birch variant distinguished by a flame-like grain that lies dormant in the natural wood. The grain pattern of the unique birch variant is only fully revealed once the wood is prepared and treated. Loimu is dispatched in its raw, untreated state with an accompanying oil finishing set (wood oil, sanding papers, and oiling cloth). With minimal components, Stool 60 is flat-packed, making transport both economical and ecological.
OILING PROCESS
Alvar Aalto
Each Stool 60 Loimu owner will complete the oiling process, creating their unique stool echoing Alvar Aalto’s mantra that “a standardized object is never a finished product, on the contrary, it is made to be completed by the individual’s human mind.” The result is a beautiful, engaging, tactile experience for the owner, as completing the oil process creates a unique stool and establishes a deeper understanding of the design’s ingenuity.
ASSEMBLY
Alvar Aalto
The final step of the process is attaching the iconic L-legs to the stool with three simple screws. Alvar Aalto, in collaboration with furniture manufacturer Otto Korhonen, developed the ground-breaking process that resulted in the L-leg. Cuts are made in the end of a piece of wood, with the slits extending just below the level of the planned bend. Wood veneer strips are then inserted and glued. This simplifies the bending process and increases the stability of the component. Aalto called the L-leg “the little sister of the architectural column,” and its arrival announced a break with longstanding traditions of furniture production. Its system of standard components enabled the creation of more than 50 versatile products.
FINISHED PIECE

Celebrating 90 years in continuous production, Artek’s Stool 60 is the most elemental of furniture pieces. Since 1933, Stool 60 has barely changed in either material or form, its simplicity and honesty have ensured its timelessness. Thanks to its ingenious construction and durability, each stool ages with grace and remains a true companion for life. Stool 60 has accompanied owners in their everyday life for almost a century, following them from home to home, often being passed on from one generation to the next.
