SPOTLIGHT ON PATRICIA URQUIOLA

July 14, 2020

In every possible way, Patricia Urquiola is in a league of her own. Born in 1961 in Hidalgo, Spain, this powerhouse of a designer studied architecture and design in Madrid before graduating from the Milan Politecnico in 1989 and studying under some of Italy’s most iconic designers, including Vico Magistretti and Achille Castiglioni, and then opening her own studio in 2001. Urquiola’s designs often feel as though they transcend time and space, expressing the designer’s spectacular vision of a world filled with unique and colorful beauty. We’re proud to feature a wide range of Urquiola’s designs in our collection, and this week, we’re highlighting five of our favorites to provide an introduction into her extraordinary body of work.
SHIMMER SIDE TABLE
Patricia Urquiola
Breathtakingly innovative, the Shimmer Side Table is simply a work of art. Showcasing the designer’s unparalleled understanding of glass, this collection of low-laminated glass side tables was an instant hit when it debuted at Salone del Mobile 2014, exhibiting stunningly colored shadows, light refractions, and reflections to create a beautifully whimsical expression. The side tables feature round tops with rounded legs in a special multicolored iridescent finish, with nuances varying according to the angle of the light and vantage point, allowing the design to adopt multiple identities and personalities. Available in two sizes. Also available as a console and coffee table.
CABOCHE SUSPENSION LIGHT
Patricia Urquiola
Composed of over one hundred glistening glass spheres, Caboche is a timeless and elegant lamp. Drawing from a wide range of influences, it’s almost impossible to pinpoint exactly what decade or style—past, present, or future—fits best to describe Caboche, ultimately providing an entirely unique identity for this lighting design. Caboche feels equally impressive when placed solo in the home, or when used repetitiously throughout commercial spaces such as hotels, restaurants, and lounge areas. Available in two tasteful and sophisticated options, clear or gold, the light is perfect for illuminating spaces of varying shapes and sizes.
BISEL OCCASIONAL TABLE
Patricia Urquiola
Yet another testament to Urquiola’s masterful understanding of glass design, Bisel once again explores the intersection between color, light, and material through tinted, colored glass. The designer’s thoughtfulness and creativity shine through in virtually every detail of Bisel’s design; the tabletop, the base, the edges, and the way light appears as it passes through the table. With its jewel-like appearance, Bisel is the conversation piece you’ve been waiting for, a modern work of art destined to transform your contemporary lounge space into something truly incredible. Available in green or ochre.
SHIMMER SPECCHI
Patricia Urquiola
Since you’ve already fallen in love with the Shimmer Side Table, why not expand the collection? The Shimmer Specchi’s genius is found in the design’s ability to reflect different colors based on the light and space around it. Made entirely of extralight glass and produced using refined processing techniques with an iridescent multichromatic finish, the mirror’s dynamic and variable appearance is enhanced, creating a design that is reborn and reinvented throughout the hours of the day. Available in five sizes, there is sure to be a Shimmer Specchi that fits perfectly in your space, adding liveliness, ingenuity, and personality to your home.
CROSSING TABLE
Patricia Urquiola
Once again, Urquiola plays with glass and color in entirely unexpected ways—yet the artistic and unconventional Crossing Table still manages to feel completely different than anything the designer has done before. Made entirely out of laminated transparent extralight glass, Crossing incorporates three-dimensional polychromatic decoration, presenting a magical pattern of weaving and overlapping lines and colours. The perception of this decoration changes continuously depending on the vantage point, making the design even more exciting. By means of a particular laminating process, the crystal glass is assembled and overlapped irregularly, enhancing the graphic effect and finalizing a design that is genuinely unlike any other.
