February 26th was the birthday of not one but two legendary Italian designers, Achille Castiglioni and Angelo Mangiarotti. Born eleven years apart, both designers were raised in Milan, graduated from the illustrious Architecture School at Milan’s Polytechnic University, and spent their careers living and working in their hometown. Castiglioni and Mangiarotti are members of an elite club of Milanese designers, including Ettore Sottsass, Vico Magistretti, Marco Zanuso and Alessandro Mendini, that together not only set the course for modern Italian design but influenced the meaning of 20th century modernity as we know it.
