OUT OF THE WOODS

November 14, 2018

It’s Autumn—the oaks have turned a tawny red, walnuts a brilliant gold. These species of dense hardwood can be crafted into a multitude of designs. This week we discover five objects that are produced from our favorite material, natural, solid wood.
POLLOCK TABLE
Dan Pollock, 2014
“My sculptures are sometimes for the sake of art and sometimes function, often both.” Hand-carved in solid hardwood, Pollock’s sculptural tables are made from found pieces of fallen timber. Native to the artist’s home, Pollock’s medium of choice includes White Fir, Giant Juniper, Cottonwood, and Pine from the California forests. Shown here in Cottonwood, each piece is uniquely individual.
GJ CHAIR
Grete Jalk, 1963
A collaborative effort between Grete Jalk and Poul Jeppesen, the experimental GJ chair took seven years to create. Enlisting new and revolutionary steam bending technology, the GJ is regarded as Jalks best work. A study in organic form, this piece is a thoroughly complex and technical creation.

RAILBACK SOFA
Mel Smilow, 1950
Made of solid walnut, the Railback Sofa is a prime example of hand-crafted wooden furniture. Featuring an exposed rail structure, this architectural piece presents exceptional detail from every angle. Made in America since 1950, the Railback Sofa is an enduring modern classic.
PLANK DINING TABLE
Craig Bassam and Scott Fellows
Available in solid walnut, ash, teak, or santos rosewood, the Plank dining table appears to float seamlessly atop its slender triangular brass base. A study in simplicity and engineering excellence, the Plank challenges conventional structural notions of design.

IN HEAVEN
Birgit Gammerler and Nana Groner, 2006
The In Heaven elevates your resting experience. This geometric bed features a minimal, yet light aesthetic. Headboard in wood, with an upholstered option for added comfort. Offered in American walnut, European walnut, oak, maple, cherry, or beech. Oak and maple may be stained in ten color varieties.
