SUITE NY is thrilled to introduce the exquisite designs of KOYORI, a brand that seamlessly blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary global influences. Crafted by leading manufacturers from across Japan, Koyori represents a commitment to high-quality, sophisticated designs. Collaborating with renowned designers like Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and GamFratesi, Koyori showcases the versatility of Japanese manufacturing technology, specializing in solid bentwood and molded plywood furniture. No material is closer to the heart of the people of Japan than wood, and no material is more important to KOYORI. This week, we are highlighting the five elegant and distinctive chair models from KOYORI’s debut year.
MIAU
GamFratesi
A blend of Scandinavian and Japanese design aesthetics, the Miau Armchair combines high-precision wood bending with expert wood carving techniques. The armrests and the backrest are made of a single piece of bent wood, allowing the natural grain to become more uniform and beautiful. This technique is also functional in nature, as it creates a more durable element than if it had been constructed from separate pieces. To ensure maximum sitting comfort, the wooden seat and backrest are ergonomically designed. Available in oak or walnut with upholstered or molded wood seat.
MUSUBI
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
Designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, the Musubi chair combines Japanese craftsmanship with the French design duo’s contemporary aesthetic. The Musubi Chair design emphasizes the beauty of sculpted wood. The gentle curves of the back and armrest contrast beautifully with the straight lines of the legs, which emphasize the seat’s sculptural silhouette. Appearing as if they are a singular piece, each element of the chair is joined with a high degree of precision, accuracy and technique. Available in beech or oak.
EDAHA
GamFratesi
GamFratesi took inspiration from the shapes of branches and leaves to create the smoothly curved Edaha chair. Creating a structure that gently supports the suspended seat, Edaha’s four uniquely curved wood legs cross over one another and slightly taper at the ends. The chair has a curved shell seat made from two pieces of wood that meet at the center to create a symmetrical wood grain pattern. The Edaha chair will be available in late spring of 2024.
SHAKU
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
The Shaku chair is a petite, charming chair which combines simplicity and precision with durability. The seemingly straightforward chair creates an illusion that the backrest is being held in place by the contoured seat. Shaku’s high backrest offers comfort and support, while its compact width allows it to be easily tucked under a table, making it ideal for use at a dining or meeting table. The Bouroullec brothers consider the Shaku chair to be boundless of time, suggesting it appears as though it could have existed several centuries ago. Available in solid beech with a black finish.

KAWARA
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
Inspired by Sori Yanagi’s iconic Butterfly stool, the Bouroullec brothers set out to produce a chair which combined the high-quality details of Japanese craftsmanship with European design. The result is the Kawara Armchair, a beautiful moulded wood veneer chair with a three-dimensionally contoured back and armrest. Kawara is available in four different finishes and is also available with an optional upholstered seat.
