Few materials can bring the outdoors in like natural wood—from ancient, historic pieces to contemporary design classics, wood has been used to define elegant designs for thousands of years. The organic quality of this material adds warmth and contrast with modern materials and architecture. From dark hardwoods like walnut, to light, airy grains such as birch, ash, and oak, wood furniture provides a spectrum of moods. This week, we’re highlighting five distinct wood designs that showcase the possibilities of this enduring natural material. |

JULIUS SOFA |
Färg and Blanche |
Meet Julius: a generous and inviting sofa unlike any other. Julius is made using the revolutionary eco-friendly and waste-minimizing technique of “wood tailoring.” Designers Färg and Blanche invented and developed this concept, in which the wood, padding and upholstery are all sewn together by the hands of highly skilled craftsmen. Sewing machines are used to stitch directly on to the wood, piecing together different materials and parts, and the result is a highly unique stitching pattern which decorates the outer ash or oak shell with thread, available in a variety of colors. |

CENTENNIALE |
Joanna Laajisto |
Nikari’s Centenniale coffee table is made entirely of solid ash or oak and is meant to have cracks, uneveness and knots, making each piece unique and displaying the innate qualities of solid wood. The careful craftsmanship that goes into creating Centenniale makes every piece an individual work of art, while the name itself honors the fact that the material, although already aged, is intended to remain exceptionally durable for many years of use. The resulting table is profoundly beautiful, with generous proportions that allow the material to truly shine. |

VNA DINING CHAIR |
Florian Hauswirth |
Last week we introduced you to the VNA dining table. This week, we’re turning the spotlight to its partner, the VNA dining chair. The VNA dining chair is a Stabelle, a chair made from planks inspired by traditional craftsmanship in the Alpine region. In the mountain regions, everyday objects are made by local craftsmen or skillful farmers from locally available materials, and the VNA chair is designed in the spirit of this esteemed, traditional process. The resulting design is a sophisticated addition to the contemporary home, which serves as an homage to classic European design concepts. |
