Lobby, 111 Central Park North, New York City
Chris Kraig for SUITE New York
111 Central Park North is a new, glass-fronted residential building developed by The Athena Group which sits on the north perimeter of Central Park. The building's lobby has an immense windowed entrance overlooking the park. To bring the natural, outdoor element into this contemporary space, Chris Kraig used over-scaled furniture in a color scheme that reflects the natural lichens that cling to the schist outcroppings just yards away. He incorporated the lichen's soft gray greens, the natural wood of the sculpted Dan Pollock "stump" coffee table, and the dark gray of the swivel-based chairs with the living stone and ivory whites of the leather sofa and poufs. This corresponded with the spring magnolia blossoms in the nearby conservatory garden, resulting in a subtle yet geometrically strong installation that complemented the building's architecture and brought nature inside.
